LUIS G. SANTOS

The theme of humanity is a constant in Luis’ work; growing up in The Bronx, NYC as a child of Dominican immigrants, Luis quickly had to develop an effective way to channel the cultures around him and weave them together in a manner which respected the heritage and traditions of each. Consequently Luis' filmmaking captures the intersections and boundaries that help reveal so much about true human nature, whether through observed visuals, intimate portraiture or capturing the very people with whom he was raised.

‘What's Going On’ is a poetic documentary set to the sounds of Marvin Gaye's cry of protest against hatred, suffering and injustice. Images of hope and beauty dominate but they are underscored by the struggle and oppression experienced by the residents of Luis' home borough. The film played at festivals worldwide and kickstarted Luis' advertising career.

Luis first piece of advertising work " De Lo Mio" for Nike both continued and expanded upon the themes of cultural pride and resilience so powerfully depicted in " What's Going On?". The film presents a powerful, vibrant portrait of the Bronx as a platform to launch a shoe dedicated to one of NYC's most influential cultures and communities: Dominicans.

Luis’s cinematic eye and journalistic approach give a unique perspective on craft and creativity. His films are honest, beautiful, thought provoking and celebratory.
